Obama Moves to the Right on Abortion?

It is normal in election years, for Democratic candidates to pander to their leftist base before the convention and then move to the center afterwards to appeal to more centrist voters and vice-versa for the Republicans.

Obama seems to be getting a head start on this.  Yesterday he reversed himself and stated that  “mental distress” should not qualify as a health exception for late term-abortions.  This will put him at odds with many in his party who do not share the same opinion.

In an interview this week with “Relevant,” a Christian magazine, Obama said prohibitions on late-term abortions (Abortions after 12 weeks) must contain “a strict, well defined exception for the health of the mother.”   Obama then added: “Now, I don’t think that ‘mental distress’ qualifies as the health of the mother. I think it has to be a serious physical issue that arises in pregnancy, where there are real, significant problems to the mother carrying that child to term.”

Last year, Obama said that he “strongly disagreed” with a Supreme Court ruling that upheld a federal ban on late-term abortions.  Obama said it “dramatically departs form previous precedents safeguarding the health of pregnant women.”

Abortions after 12 weeks still comprise about 12% of the abortions performed in the U.S.
